AKTU CGPA Calculator – SGPA, CGPA & Percentage (Official Formula)

This calculator follows the B.Tech ordinance of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow, for students admitted from 2018-19 onwards under the university's own scheme. Enter your grades and credits for your SGPA, your semesters for the CGPA, and convert the CGPA to a percentage with AKTU's formula.

How AKTU calculates SGPA and CGPA

AKTU uses absolute grading: your marks in a subject decide the grade, from A+ (90 and above, 10 points) to E (40 to 44, 4 points), the lowest pass grade. Below 40 is F, and an absent student is also given F. To pass a theory subject you also need at least 30% in the end-semester exam.

Your SGPA is the sum of credits × grade points over the semester's courses, divided by the total credits. An F counts as 0 points but its credits stay in the total, so it pulls the SGPA down until you pass the subject; then the semester's SGPA is worked out again with your new grade. The CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs.

AKTU grade points: B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19

Applies to: B.Tech students admitted from 2018-19 onwards under the university's own scheme (autonomous institutes have their own rules).

GradeGrade pointsMarksMeaning
A+1090 and aboveOutstanding
A980 to 89Excellent
B+870 to 79Very good
B760 to 69Good
C650 to 59Above average
D545 to 49Average
E440 to 44Pass (minimum)
F0Below 40Fail

SGPA: SGPA = sum of (credits × grade points) ÷ total credits of the courses taken in the semester (Clause 14.4). An F counts as 0 points with its credits included; when you pass the course later, the semester SGPA is worked out again with the new grade. AKTU's own examples cut the result to two decimals (6.4878 becomes 6.48), and so does this calculator. A semester needs E or better in every subject and an SGPA of at least 5.0.

CGPA: CGPA = sum of (semester credits × SGPA) ÷ total credits (Clause 14.4(c)), over eight semesters, or six for lateral entry.

Percentage: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (Ordinance Clause 15). The ordinance's own example: (8.66 − 0.75) × 10 = 79.1%.

Examples from the ordinance

The ordinance's first example has four courses: B+ in 5.5 credits (44 credit points), C in 4 credits (24), B in 5 credits (35) and A+ in 3 credits (30). That is 133 credit points over 17.5 credits: SGPA = 7.6.

In the second example the same student also fails a 3-credit course: 133 credit points over 20.5 credits gives SGPA = 6.48. When the course is later passed with an E (12 more credit points), the semester's SGPA becomes 145 ÷ 20.5 = 7.07.

AKTU CGPA to percentage

Clause 15 of the ordinance gives the formula: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Its own example: a CGPA of 8.66 is (8.66 − 0.75) × 10 = 79.1%. Students of the older 2016-17 scheme had CGPA × 10 instead, which is why you may see both formulas mentioned.

Frequently asked questions

What CGPA is first division at AKTU?

A CGPA of 6.5 to below 7.5 is first division, and 7.5 or above is first division with distinction if you passed every subject in a single attempt. A CGPA of 5.0 to below 6.5 is second division.

Does this work for autonomous institutes affiliated to AKTU?

No. Autonomous institutes publish their own ordinances, which may use a different grade scale or percentage formula.

Why does AKTU show 6.48 when the division gives 6.4878?

AKTU's examples cut the SGPA to two decimals instead of rounding it, and the calculator does the same so your result matches.
