DTU CGPA Calculator – SGPA, CGPA & Percentage (Official Rules)

This calculator follows the grading rules of Delhi Technological University (DTU) for B.Tech students admitted in 2018-19 and later. Enter the letter grades from your result to get your SGPA, add your semesters for the CGPA, and convert the CGPA into a percentage with DTU's own formula.

How DTU calculates SGPA and CGPA

DTU uses a 10-point scale with relative grading: your grade depends on how you did compared with your class (the class average and spread), with fixed upper cut-offs of 91%, 82%, 73%, 64%, 55% and 46% and a pass mark of 35%. That is why the calculator asks for your letter grades rather than marks. In small classes of up to 30 students, grades are given on actual marks instead.

The important difference between SGPA and CGPA at DTU is how an F counts. In the SGPA, an F counts as 0 points and its credits stay in the total, so it pulls the SGPA down. In the CGPA, courses with an F are left out completely; only courses passed with P or better count.

DTU grade points: Ordinance 1(B), 2018-19 batch onwards

Applies to: B.Tech students admitted in 2018-19 and later.

GradeGrade pointsMeaning
O10Outstanding
A+9Excellent
A8Very good
B+7Good
B6Above average
C5Average
P4Pass
F0Fail

SGPA: SGPA = sum of (credits × grade points) ÷ sum of credits, over every course you are registered in that semester. An F counts as 0 points and its credits stay in the total, so it lowers the SGPA (Regulation R.I(B).17).

CGPA: CGPA counts only the courses passed with P or better: sum of (credits × grade points) ÷ sum of their credits. An F is left out of the CGPA. If a semester had an F, enter that semester's SGPA without the failed course and only the credits you passed.

Percentage: Percentage = CGPA × 10, as set by DTU's notice of 14 September 2018 for B.Tech batches from 2015-16 onwards.

Example

A semester with four courses: O in a 4-credit course, A in a 3-credit course, F in a 3-credit course and B+ in a 4-credit course. Credit points: 4 × 10 + 3 × 8 + 3 × 0 + 4 × 7 = 92. Credits: 14. SGPA = 92 ÷ 14 = 6.57. For the CGPA, the failed course is left out: the same 92 credit points over 11 credits, or 8.36 for this semester's part of the CGPA. The F costs SGPA points now, but not CGPA points.

DTU CGPA to percentage

DTU's notice of 14 September 2018 says the CGPA of its graduates is converted to a percentage by multiplying it by 10. It applies to B.Tech and B.Tech (Evening) from the 2015-16 batch onwards. A CGPA of 8.2 is 82%. DTU also treats a CGPA of 6.0 or more as first division for employment purposes.

You may see "(CGPA − 0.75) × 10" quoted for DTU on other websites. That comes from an older 2015 notice for M.Tech and MBA programmes and does not apply to B.Tech students.

Frequently asked questions

What CGPA is first division at DTU?

A CGPA of 6.0 or above is first division, and 8.0 or above is first division with distinction.

Does an F lower my DTU CGPA?

No. An F lowers the SGPA of that semester, but courses with an F are not counted in the CGPA. Once you pass the course, it counts with its new grade.

Can I calculate my DTU grade from my marks?

Not exactly, because DTU grades depend on the class average and spread. Use the letter grade shown in your result.
