GTU SPI, CPI & CGPA Calculator – With Percentage Formula
This calculator follows the grading rules of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) for B.E. students. Enter your grades and credits for your SPI, add your semesters for the CPI, and convert your CPI or CGPA into a percentage with GTU's official formula.
How GTU calculates SPI, CPI and CGPA
GTU uses eight letter grades, from AA (85 to 100 marks, 10 points) to DD (35 to 39 marks, 4 points), the lowest pass grade. Below 35 is FF, worth 0 points. Each part of a subject (the university exam, the internal assessment and the practical) must be passed separately; failing any of them is a backlog. For the calculation, go by the grades on your GTU result.
Your SPI (Semester Performance Index) is the sum of credits × grade points over all courses of the semester, divided by the total credits. An FF counts with 0 points and its credits stay in, and that semester's SPI is not worked out again after you clear the course. The CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) uses the same formula over all semesters so far, but there a cleared FF is replaced by your passing grade. Your B.E. degree is awarded on the CGPA of the last four semesters.
GTU grade points: GTU B.E. grading
Applies to: B.E. students of all current batches; the 2024-25 curriculum kept the same grades and formulas.
| Grade | Grade points | Marks | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| AA | 10 | 85 to 100 | Highest grade |
| AB | 9 | 75 to 84 | Pass |
| BB | 8 | 65 to 74 | Pass |
| BC | 7 | 55 to 64 | Pass |
| CC | 6 | 45 to 54 | Pass |
| CD | 5 | 40 to 44 | Pass |
| DD | 4 | 35 to 39 | Lowest pass grade |
| FF | 0 | Below 35 | Fail |
SPI: SPI = sum of (credits × grade points) ÷ sum of credits over all courses taken in the semester. An FF counts as 0 points with its credits included, and that semester's SPI is not recalculated after the course is cleared.
CPI: CPI = the same formula over all courses of all semesters so far; an FF that was later cleared is replaced by the passing grade. The degree is awarded on the CGPA of the last four semesters. Class: 7.1 and above First Class with Distinction, 6.5 and above First Class, 5.5 and above Second Class, below 5.5 Pass Class.
Percentage: Percentage = (CPI or CGPA − 0.5) × 10, as set by GTU Notification 1/2012, which GTU published again in December 2025.
Official source: GTU Evaluation System (grade points, SPI and CPI), archived copy; GTU Notification 1/2012 on CPI/CGPA, class and percentage. Checked October 2026.
Example
A semester with AA in a 4-credit course (40 credit points), BB in 4 credits (32), CC in 3 credits (18) and DD in 1 credit (4): 94 credit points over 12 credits, SPI = 7.83. With a failed course, AB in 3 credits (27), BC in 4 credits (28) and FF in 3 credits (0) give 55 ÷ 10 = SPI = 5.5.
GTU CPI to percentage
GTU Notification 1/2012 gives the formula: percentage = (CPI or CGPA − 0.5) × 10. A CGPA of 8.0 is 75%, the same equivalence GTU still uses in its 2026 guidelines, and a CPI of 7.53 is 70.3%. Circulars from 2008 and 2011 implied (CPI − 0.75) × 10, which is why you may see that formula too; the 2012 notification replaced them, and GTU published it again in December 2025.
Frequently asked questions
What CPI is first class with distinction at GTU?
7.1 and above is first class with distinction, 6.5 and above first class, 5.5 and above second class, and below 5.5 pass class. For the degree, the class is based on the CGPA of the last four semesters.
What is the difference between SPI, CPI and CGPA?
SPI is the result of one semester, CPI of all semesters so far, and CGPA of the last four semesters, which your B.E. degree is based on.
Does an FF lower my CPI for good?
No. Once you clear the course, your passing grade replaces the FF in the CPI. The SPI of the semester in which you failed stays as it was.
