VTU CGPA Calculator – SGPA, CGPA & Percentage (2022 & 2025 Scheme)
This calculator follows the regulations of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, for B.E. and B.Tech students of the 2022 scheme (admitted 2022-23 to 2024-25) and the 2025 scheme (admitted from 2025-26). Both use the same grades, SGPA rules and percentage formula. Enter your grades and credits for your SGPA, add your semesters for the CGPA, and convert it into a percentage.
How VTU calculates SGPA and CGPA
VTU has seven pass grades, from O (90 to 100% of the marks, 10 points) to P (40 to 49%, 4 points). Below 40% is F. To pass a course you need at least 35% in the end-semester exam and 40% of the total marks.
Your SGPA counts every course you registered for in the semester: an F, or AB for an absent student, adds 0 points but keeps its credits in the total. The CGPA works differently: it counts only the courses you have passed, so a failed course's credits are left out until you clear it, and then its new grade counts. Both are rounded to two decimals. The CGPA starts from the second semester, or from the fourth for lateral entry students.
VTU grade points: 2022 and 2025 schemes
Applies to: B.E./B.Tech students admitted from 2022-23 onwards (the 2022 regulations, and the 2025 regulations from 2025-26 with the same grades and formulas).
| Grade | Grade points | Marks | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 90 to 100 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | 80 to 89 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | 70 to 79 | Very good |
| B+ | 7 | 60 to 69 | Good |
| B | 6 | 55 to 59 | Above average |
| C | 5 | 50 to 54 | Average |
| P | 4 | 40 to 49 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Below 40 | Fail |
| AB | 0 | Absent (counted as F) |
SGPA: SGPA = sum of (credits × grade points) ÷ sum of credits over all courses registered in the semester, rounded to two decimals. F and AB count as 0 points with their credits included. Non-credit courses (PP and NP grades) and activity points are not counted.
CGPA: CGPA = sum of credit points ÷ sum of credits over the courses passed so far, rounded to two decimals: the credits of a course with an F are left out until you pass it. VTU's own example: 101 credit points in semester I (14 credits passed) and 178 in semester II (25 passed) give 279 ÷ 39 = 7.15. The degree needs a CGPA of at least 4.
Percentage: Percentage = CGPA × 10, so a CGPA of 8.20 is 82% (the regulations' own example). Class: 70% and above First Class with Distinction, 60% to below 70% First Class, 50% to below 60% Second Class, 40% to below 50% Pass Class.

The example from the regulations
VTU's regulations work out a first semester of nine courses with one F and one absent: 101 credit points over 20 credits, SGPA = 101 ÷ 20 = 5.05. In the second semester the student clears both backlogs (with B and B+) but fails a 1-credit course: 178 credit points over 26 credits, SGPA = 6.85. The CGPA leaves out the failed credits: 101 + 178 = 279 credit points over 14 + 25 = 39 credits passed, CGPA = 7.15. Enter the same grades above and the calculator gives the same two SGPAs.
The CGPA tab multiplies each SGPA by the semester's credits. That gives VTU's CGPA exactly as long as you have no F; with a failed course, take the CGPA from your grade card.
VTU CGPA to percentage
Both schemes convert with percentage = CGPA × 10, and the regulations' own example is a CGPA of 8.20 = 82%. Older VTU schemes used a different formula, so check which scheme you are in before you convert.
